How to Merge PDF Files Into One Document

Combine several PDFs into a single file in your browser, control the order, and know what survives a merge — bookmarks, form fields, and file size.

What merging does to your pages

Merging copies whole pages from each source document into a new file. Nothing is re-rendered and nothing is recompressed, so a merged page looks exactly like the page it came from: text stays selectable, images keep their original resolution, and links inside a page still work. That is why merging is safe to run on a finished document — unlike exporting or re-printing it, it cannot quietly degrade quality.

Steps to merge PDF files

Open the free PDF merger

  1. Open the Merge PDF tool and select two or more PDFs — pick several at once, or add more in a second batch.
  2. Check the file list, because the merged document follows it from top to bottom.
  3. Use the up and down arrows to move a file, and remove anything that does not belong.
  4. Press Merge; the combined PDF downloads straight away.
  5. Open the download and confirm each section starts where you expect.

Order is set by file, not by page

The arrows move an entire document, so whole files are joined in list order. If you need pages interleaved — a signed page dropped into the middle of a contract, or an appendix inserted after chapter two — split the document at that point first, then merge the pieces in the order you want. Both operations copy pages losslessly, so the round trip costs nothing in quality.

Why the merged file is bigger than you expected

File sizes add up, and shared resources are not deduplicated. If five reports each embed the same font, the merged PDF carries five copies of it. That is normal and harmless, but it explains a result that looks larger than the arithmetic suggested. Compress once at the end rather than compressing each part first — a single pass over the finished document gives a cleaner result.

What does not survive a merge

  • Bookmarks: the outline panel from each source document is not carried into the merged file.
  • Interactive form fields may stop being fillable, although the visible page content is preserved exactly.
  • Document metadata such as title and author belongs to the new file rather than to the first source.
  • Printed page numbers do not renumber — each section keeps the numbers that were typeset into it.

If one of the files will not open

A PDF that asks for a password before it will display cannot be merged until that password is removed, because no tool can read the pages without it. If any of your files were protected, unlock your own copy first and merge the unlocked version — that also avoids the unpredictable output an encrypted source can produce.

  • Look for duplicate cover pages or repeated letterheads between sections.
  • Rotate any pages that arrived from a sideways scan so the whole document reads one way up.
  • Read the last page of each section to make sure nothing was cut off or doubled.
  • If it is going out by email, compress it once everything else is correct.

Privacy

The merge runs in your browser and none of the files are uploaded, which matters when the documents are contracts, invoices, medical records, or anything else you would not paste into an unfamiliar web form. Close the tab and nothing remains anywhere except your own downloads folder.
