How text extraction works
A text-based PDF stores real characters, so the words can be read straight out of the file without retyping or fighting with copy and paste. The PDF Gen reads that text layer page by page in your browser and hands you the whole document as plain text.

Steps to extract PDF text
Open the free PDF to Text tool · Edit original text in PDF · Count the words instead
- Open the PDF to Text tool and select your file.
- Wait for the pages to be read — long documents take a few seconds.
- Review the preview and the per-page word and character counts.
- Copy the text to your clipboard or download it as a .txt file.
Why a scanned PDF returns nothing
A scan is a picture of a page rather than text, so there is no text layer to read and the result comes back empty. Recognizing those characters needs OCR, which this tool does not include. If the pages are images, run the file through an OCR tool first, or export the pages as images and work from those.

Privacy and formatting notes
- The PDF is read on your device; neither the file nor the extracted text is uploaded.
- Plain text keeps the words, not the layout — tables and columns come out as lines.
- Headers, footers, and page numbers appear in the output; delete them after pasting.
- Page markers are included so you can tell where each page begins.
